US generic drug maker Mylan to set up EUR 67m packaging plant in Hungary

US-based generic drug maker Mylan is spending EUR 67m on a packaging plant in the Hungarian city of Komarom, National Economy Ministry state secretary Zsolt Becsey said at a press conference in Budapest on Thursday.
The investment will create almost 400 new jobs, Mr Becsey said.

Answering a question by MTI, Mr Becsey said Mylan had been awarded a state investment subsidy that did not exceed HUF 3m per employee.

US ambassador to Hungary Eleni Tsakopoulos said the fact Hungary had drawn USD 9bn in FDI from American investors since 1990 was a good sign of the country's ability to attract capital. Hungary's geographic location, its good infrastructure and its well-educated, motivated and creative work force are a draw for US investors, she added.

Asked by MTI whether Mylan planned to bring drug production to Hungary, Mylan COO Rajiv Malik said the company would make decisions on developments latter, depending on its experiences.

Mylan has sold its generic products in Hungary for two years, generating annual sales of about HUF 1bn, said Mylan communications director Michael B Laffin when asked by MTI.

Mylan has purchased an empty production hall in the Komarom Industrial Park and it plans to build a 17,000sqm warehouse next to the 10,000sqm packaging plant.
